Alfa Romeo at the Paris Show: New Engine Options for Giulietta and Pretty Much Nothing Else

Unless Alfa Romeo has a very big surprise up its sleeves (which we certainly hope so given that the brand is celebrating its 100th birthday this year...), the only new models capable of capturing our attention at the Milanese firm's Paris Motor Show booth will be the usual 'female fatales' standing alongside their automobiles.

According to the company's press release, "the stars" of the Alfa Romeo stand will be the brand-new 140 HP 2.0 JTDM and the 170 HP 1.4 MultiAir turbo petrol with "Alfa TCT" automatic transmission versions of the Giulietta.

When equipped with the new 140-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo diesel, the Giulietta hatchback returns an average fuel consumption of just 4.5lt/10km (equal to 52.3mpg US) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

The second new product for the Giulietta range is the introduction of a dry twin clutch automatic transmission (TCT) combined with the 170 HP 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. The same transmission will also be offered with Alfa's 170HP 2.0-liter turbo diesel.

The brand-new Alfa TCT, which was first shown on the Mito supermini, is combined with start/stop tech that helps reduce CO2 emissions to 121g/km on the gasoline model.

On an even far less interesting note, Alfa Romeo will also show a couple of MiTo sport hatches and the 2011MY versions of the 159 sedan and Sportwagon (unveiled back in May), including one dressed in "Rosso Competizione" livery and equipped with the new 136-horsepower variant of the 2.0-liter JTDM diesel engine (Euro 5).

New Multijet II Turbo Diesel for Alfa Romeo MiTo

Alfa Romeo is ushering in the next generation of its diesel technology to the MiTo range in the UK with the introduction of the MultiJet II engine. Developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT), the 1.3-liter JTDM II diesel comes with Start&Stop tech and a Diesel Particulate Filter. It develops an output of 95bhp at 4,000 rpm and 200Nm of peak torque at 1,500 rpm.

Hooked up to a five-speed manual gearbox, the new diesel unit gives the Italian hatchback a 0-62mph (100km/h) acceleration time of 11.6 seconds while returning 65.7mpg UK in the combined cycle (equal to 54.7 mpg US and 4.3 lt/100km) and emitting just 112g/km of CO2.

The 1.3-liter JTDM II is available with three trim levels - Turismo, Lusso and Veloce, with prices set at £13,995, £14,815 and £15,785 respectively.

Alfa Romeo MiTo with GTA-Like Aero Kit by Lester

While Alfa Romeo enthusiasts are awaiting for the Italian company to release a punchier variant of the MiTo in the form of the production version of the 240HP GTA Concept, tuners across Europe are presenting their own proposals for the stylish sport hatch. What Lester lacks in under-the-hood performance upgrades, the Italian tuner tries to compensate with a variety of styling parts that include a front spoiler, a rear diffuser, numerous roof spoilers, beefier side skirts, 8C Competizione-like side air vents and a hood scoop.

Alfa Romeo MiTo Lester TuningLester's offerings also include a uniquely styled woofer housing that essentially eliminates the trunk space while the Italian company said that the car pictured here also features 18-inch mulitspoke alloy wheels shod in Yokohama tires (215/40R18), a suspension kit from H&R and a sport exhaust system from Inoxcar.

Analyst Forecasts New Chrysler and Fiat Models Until 2012 Including Jeep based Alfa GTX SUV

Research firm IHS Global Insight (GI) has released a new analysis forecasting a variety of Chrysler and Fiat Group models to be built in North America between 2011 and 2012. Before we say anything else, we'd advise to pay attention to the words 'analysis' and 'forecast'. That said, don't take everything you read as a fact. The report begins with the Alfa Romeo 169, a BMW 5-Series rival that is said to be built at Chrysler's Ontario factory in Canada with the first models rolling off the assembly line as early as November 2011.

The analyst predicts that the 169 will be based on Chrysler's LX platform which underpins the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger models. While it makes sense for the Italians to use the LX platform, unless Fiat is planning to simply re-skin / re-mask the next-generation Chrysler 300 into an Alfa, in which case, we're talking about a mistake from Fiat's behalf, saying that that the Alfa Romeo 169 will be ready to enter production in about two years time, is quite optimistic. Plus, as you can see in one of Fiat's previous product plans, Alfa was supposedly scheduling to introduce a self-developed 169 in 2009 - what happened to that?

Talking about the LX platform, the forecaster said that due to the bankruptcy of Chrysler LLC and the plant closures, the start of production of the new 2011 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 have been delayed to November 2010 and January 2011 respectively.

Continuing with the North American-built Fiat models, Global Insight said that the highly successful in Europe, 500 mini, will be made in Toluca, Mexico with U.S. sales starting in July 2011.

The MINI-rivaling 500 will be the only Fiat-badged model to be sold in the States. Since the 500 is based on Fiat's 169 platform, the Toluca plant will also produce the Jeep Panda 4x4, again from July 2011. We're guessing that the Jeep variant will most likely be a remasked version of the European market Panda 4x4.

Next up we have an array of models based on the Fiat Group's C-EVO platform that underpins C-segment cars like the Lancia Delta and Fiat Bravo. The report says that the C-EVO will be used on the next-generation Dodge Journey crossover, Dodge Caliber crossover and Chrysler Sebring sedan. Production is slated to begin for the Journey and Caliber in July 2012 at the Belvidere Assembly Plant, and for the Sebring, in June 2011 at the Toluca assembly plant.

In addition to the above models, the C-EVO platform is also reported to form the base for an Alfa Romeo compact SUV (no date) and weirdly enough, for the successor of the Jeep Liberty (July 2012) with both SUVs said to be produced at the Toledo plant in Ohio.

But the report gets even better as it is predicted that Fiat will produce a larger Alfa Romeo SUV model called the GTX at Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant beginning in July 2011. The GTX is said to be based on Jeep's WL platform that underpins the 2011 Grand Cherokee. However, bear in mind that the Grand Cherokee's WL platform is derived from Mercedes-Benz (it was developed during Daimler's reign over the company) so we're not entirely sure if Fiat has the rights to use the platform for one of its own models.

The paper ends with two subcompact hatches, the Dodge Hornet and Alfa Romeo MiTo that will share the same hardware- aka Fiat's 199 B-segment platform. Both cars are reported to be built for the American market at Chrysler's Belvidere assembly plant in Illinois with production slated to begin in March 2011 for the Hornet and July 2011 for the MiTo.

Call us skeptics, but if you want our opinion, we find the forecast extremely optimistic in the sense that Fiat will not only have to develop, design, engineer and test a whole bunch of new cars but also revamp Chrysler's North American factories to build the vehicles and all this in just two years from now.

Chatenet CH26: Weird MINI - Alfa Romeo Like Micro Car from France

The first thought that leaped into mind upon seeing the CH26 was something like - "oh, another MINI - Alfa Romeo Mito potpourri baked in China". We could be wrong, but from what we gather, China has nothing to do with the tiny city car that is the work of a French company called Chatenet. Measuring just over 3 meters (3,065mm to be precise), the CH26 is 370mm or about 4-inches longer than the second generation Smart Fortwo.

Chatenet CH26 MINI - CARSCOOPWe're not sure if it's a typo or not, but the French company says on its 'Spartan' website that the two-seater micro car is powered by a 523cc two-cylinder diesel engine that 'spits out' a mere 5.4 horsepower at 3,200 rpm. The CH26 is said to weigh in at 349kg or 769 pounds and according to Chatenet, it can reach a top speed of 45km/h or 28 mph with an average fuel consumption of 3.15 lt/100km or 75mpg US allowing to travel around 500 km (310 miles) on a single tank of fuel.

Chatenet did not release prices on its website, but from a quick search that we performed on the net we found new examples of the CH26 being offered for sale in France at the ridiculous price of €13,600 that comes to around $19,000 at the current exchange rates.

Novitec Spices up the Alfa Romeo MiTo

The German tuner of Italian hardware, Novitec, has developed a comprehensive modification package for the new Alfa Romeo MiTo sport hatchback with power and styling treatments. Novitec offers upgrades for three MiTo engines, the most powerful being the 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline unit that gains a 31HP and 30Nm bump for an overall output of 186HP and 260Nm of torque. The result is a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time in 7,4 seconds, or 0,6 seconds faster than the standard 155HP production model.

Alfa Romeo MiTo Novitec - CarscoopFor the diesel models, Novitec's ECU kit boosts the 1.3-liter JTD's output from 90HP to 110HP while the 1.6-liter JTD delivers 144HP, up from 120HP. The tuner claims that peak torque is increased in both cases by around 50Nm. Tuned engines can also be upgraded with a sport rear muffler with one, two or four tailpipes.

Novitec also offers two suspension modification solutions, the first being a simple lowering kit that brings the MiTo 40mm closer to the road and the second, a stainless-steel coil-over suspension with adjustable ride height and adjustable dampers. The later gives the Alfa a tauter ride while allowing the driver to lower the car's ride height between 35mm and 65mm.

The shell of the Italian hatch has been adorned with a new bodykit that includes a three-piece front apron, side skirts, a rear apron with an integrated diffuser and a roof spoiler. A new set of 18-inch alloys available in silver or black finish fitted with 215/35 R18 Pirelli rubber finish off the look of the vehicle.
